Major renovation at Gaddafi Stadium nears completion
LAHORE: Lahore’s iconic Gaddafi Stadium is set to unveil its dramatic transformation, with renovation work entering its final phase just days before the February 5 completion deadline.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirms the historic venue will be ready to host matches in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, marking Pakistan’s return to hosting major international cricket tournaments.
The ambitious renovation project, which began in August 2024, has transformed the stadium into a state-of-the-art cricket facility. Most notably, the removal of obstructive steel fences in favor of a dry moat system has revolutionized the spectator experience while maintaining security standards.
The stadium’s capacity has been increased to 35,000, with completely reconstructed premium and corporate enclosures. Despite initial skepticism about the project’s tight timeline, more than 250 workers have worked continuously to modernize the venue.
The upgrade represents Pakistan’s first major cricket infrastructure project since being awarded the Champions Trophy hosting rights three years ago. “This renovation isn’t just about meeting international standards—it’s about creating a world-class cricket destination,” a PCB spokesperson said. The refurbished stadium now features enhanced player facilities, including new ice bath recovery areas and a dedicated players’ hospitality section.
The completion of this extensive renovation project signals Lahore’s readiness to host international cricket’s elite teams and stands as Pakistan’s most significant sporting infrastructure development since the 1996 World Cup. For local cricket fans, the modernized Gaddafi Stadium promises an unprecedented matchday experience when the Champions Trophy begins.
