DISCO reform
The recent establishment of DISCO Support Units (DSUs) in Sindh's power distribution companies marks a commendable step in addressing the longstanding issues of power theft, inefficient recoveries, and operational mismanagement. This initiative, though delayed, reflects the government’s resolve to curtail the ever-growing burden on the national exchequer caused by inefficiencies in DISCOs. However, while the efforts are appreciated, these measures need to be implemented consistently and across all Discos simultaneously rather than in a phased manner. This staggered approach risks undermining the momentum and effectiveness of the initiative.
It is imperative to acknowledge that although DSUs have shown promise, a more impactful solution lies in the divestment of DISCOs, as previously planned. Privatisation or strategic partnerships with the private sector have demonstrated significant improvements in operational efficiency and financial stability across power sectors in various countries.
