While discussions around smog and pollution typically focus on Punjab, Karachi – Pakistan’s business capital – faces an equally dire environmental crisis. Increasingly, Karachi is marred by hazardous air quality, vehicular emissions, industrial effluents, and unchecked waste disposal, all contributing to an unhealthy and dangerous atmosphere for residents. The situation is not unlike the crises observed in other South Asian cities, where political complexities and fragmented policies make unified action challenging.
Addressing Karachi’s pollution crisis demands a comprehensive and collaborative approach. The city’s leaders and policymakers must prioritise the health and wellbeing of citizens by uniting against pollution, implementing strict environmental regulations, and promoting sustainable urban practices. Without immediate action, Karachi’s pollution problem will continue to escalate, threatening the health of millions and diminishing the quality of life in our city.
