SFA seizes 10,000kg of substandard spices at Surjani factory
In a significant operation, the Sindh Food Authority’s Vigilance team conducted a raid on a large spice-manufacturing factory located in Surjani Town, seizing 10,000 kilogrammes of substandard and hazardous spices.
The spokesperson for the Sindh Food Authority stated that over 400 bags of contaminated spices were found during the inspection, indicating severe violations of hygiene and food safety standards.
The inspection was led by Food Safety Officer Mehboob Ali Bhatti, who, along with his team, carefully examined various sections of the factory. During the inspection, it was revealed that insects, cone flour, and choker had been mixed with spices, leading to the immediate sealing of the factory.
The spokesperson added that cockroaches, cats, and spider webs were found in the production area of the factory, highlighting the extremely poor sanitary conditions.
The factory was also fined Rs400,000 for selling substandard and unsafe products. The SFA’s team took swift action by sealing the factory and coordinated with the Solid Waste Management Department to ensure the disposal of all unsafe products.
The Sindh Food Authority emphasized that strict measures will continue to be enforced across Karachi to ensure that only safe and quality food reaches the public, underscoring the Authority’s commitment to food safety and public health,” said the spokesperson.
