Roads closure irks public
Rawalpindi: Residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad found themselves trapped in a "curfew-like" situation on Friday, with all major roads and entry points blocked due to a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest rally scheduled in D-Chowk, Islamabad. The authorities, in an effort to maintain security, sealed off key routes, creating widespread disruptions.
Over 80 per cent of the daily essentials—vegetables, fruits, milk, and poultry—come from outside the twin cities. With all incoming and outgoing traffic halted, trucks carrying these items were unable to enter, leading to food shortages that left locals facing a near famine-like situation.
Public transportation, including the Metro Bus Service, was suspended, and private vehicles were scarce. Office workers, students, and even emergency vehicles like ambulances were caught in the chaos, unable to move freely. The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) could not deliver water tankers to various areas, exacerbating the inconvenience for residents.
Mobile services were also suspended across both cities, leaving people unable to communicate with one another. Many were left stranded, including those with urgent medical needs who could not reach hospitals. Weddings and other events were disrupted due to the severe roadblocks and lack of mobility.
Key roads, including the Faizabad Interchange, Peshawar Road, and sections of Murree Road, were completely closed, causing major traffic jams and further hindering movement. Despite some alternative routes remaining open, the overall situation remained bleak, with residents expressing frustration over the government's handling of the situation. The authorities, in a bid to prevent gatherings and ensure security, also imposed Section 144 across Punjab, banning public gatherings and protests.
