Dengue outbreak

Almost every year, Pakistan has an outbreak of dengue fever, resulting in numerous deaths and placing significant strain on the country’s already burdened health care system and economy. Summer in Pakistan, with its ample rainfall and high humidity, creates ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed. Recent news reports highlight a rapid increase in dengue cases, particularly in the Rawalpindi region. Public awareness campaigns often emphasize basic preventive measures such as using mosquito sprays and repellents, eliminating larval breeding sites, and avoiding outdoor activities at dawn and dusk. But what if the monster has been bred at home?

The lack of a reliable water supply forces residents to store water at home, which becomes a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes. Compounding this issue are factors such as unavailability of electricity and overcrowded poor living conditions. Unfortunately, dengue control authorities are only following stereotyped and cosmetic arrangements every year to control dengue instead of taking real effective measures towards eliminating potential factors of breeding of mosquitoes in homes. The authorities must ensure the sufficient supply of water in populated areas so the residents do not have to store water in their homes.

Earlier this week, 146 new cases of dengue were reported in the Rawalpindi district, bringing the total to 1172 – a significantly high number. It’s crucial to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to avoid further spread.

Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed, use mosquito repellents, wear protective clothing, and ensure windows and doors are fitted with screens. Regular fumigation and prompt medical attention at the first signs of dengue symptoms, such as high fever or muscle pain, are also essential to control the outbreak.
