Transgenders stage protest

PESHAWAR: A transgender who was shot and injured the other day succumbed to injuries at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) on Wednesday.

Alisha, an office-bearer of the Transgender Alliance, was attacked by armed men on Tuesday. She was shot six times and was taken to the LRH where the authorities initially refused to admit her to the women ward.

The victim succumbed to injuries on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, several eunuchs placed the body in front of the Faqirabad Police Station and protested against attacks on the members of the transgender community.  They demanded arrest of the attackers and security to their colleagues.

The funeral prayer of Alisha was held at Dauran Pur. A large number of people turned up, making it the first public funeral of a transvestite in many years. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Abbas Majeed Marwat said that two persons had been arrested in connection with the attack on Alisha.  “The prime accused is still at large and will soon be arrested,” added Marwat. He said that he had directed the officers to arrange a meeting with the relatives and friends of Alisha to update them about the progress in the case.
