Police officials’ role in mobile phone data leakage, theft found

ISLAMABAD: The alleged involvement of some police officers in leakage of consumers mobile phone data has been revealed. In a letter to the Ministry of Interior, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has requested them to change the SOPs. According to sources, the PTA had received complaints regarding data leakage and its theft. During investigation of some of these incidents, it was revealed that some authorised police officers who can get the data were allegedly involved in data theft. The matter has been brought to the notice of Ministry of Home Affairs by the PTA and they have been requested to change their SOPs in this regard. It was suggested that departmental action should be taken against those responsible for data theft and a joint strategy should be adopted to protect user data. Senior PTA officials did not respond to queries.
