GHAZI: A power generation unit of the Tarbela Dam burnt out on Monday, official sources said.They said that Unit No. 10 of the Tarbela Dam that had the capacity to produce 175 megawatt electricity was burnt down due to unknown reasons.
General Manager of Tarbela Dam Iqbal Masood Qureshi and General Manager (Hydel) Bashir Khan visited the plant. They also attended an emergency meeting later to discuss the issue. The sources said the current production capacity of the damaged unit was 175 MW while it was expected to increase to 200 MW next month.
The sources said the unit automatically trips when it develops any kind of fault. However, the sources added it was strange that Unit10 did not trip and instead burnt out.Chief Engineer Sher Afzal Khan told The News that the unit burnt out due to a technical fault and could be repaired within a month.
