Islamabad:Major roads were badly congested both on the night before and throughout Independence Day on Wednesday here due to the influx of people from within the twin cities and surrounding areas for celebrations.
In the middle of some roads, young people parked their cars and danced to national songs blaring from stereos, all while fireworks went off. Motorists and motorcyclists not involved in the commotion had to take lengthy detours to get home due the blocked roads. They expressed frustration, arguing that disturbing others during the celebrations goes against the spirit of Independence Day.
Despite the presence of traffic police on major roads, vehicle movement was slow. Some youths caused disruptions by riding motorcycles without silencers and performing wheelies. They waved large national flags, played trumpets in defiance of the ban, and set off firecrackers and fireworks with children.
Traffic jams were reported as crowds flocked to parks and recreational spots. Long lines of vehicles, including cars, vans, and coaches, were observed at Zero Point, IJP Road, Margalla Road, and on 7th and 9th avenues, as well as Murree Road. Many people parked their vehicles along the roadside. Popular places like Faisal Masjid, Damn-i-Koh, Marghzar Zoo, Lake View Park, and Pir Sohawa drew large crowds. There were instances of heated disputes among drivers over improper parking and minor accidents. Major shopping malls, particularly Centaurus, Safa Gold and Giga Mall, saw a surge in visitors.
