LAHORE

The first ever graduation ceremony of Punjab University’s Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) was held on Saturday in which 249 graduates were awarded degrees.

Addressing the ceremony, Punjab University (PU) Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran said the media had power to present truth as false and a fake story as a truth because it could create any perception about any incident in the world. He said every journalist should prioritise the responsible journalism.

Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences Dean Dr Zakria Zakir, PU Controller Examinations Dr Shahid Munir,  ICS incharge Director Dr Noshina Saleem, senior journalist and media historian Dr Mehdi Hassan, several other journalists, ICS faculty members, students and their parents attended the ceremony.

Dr Mujahid Kamran giving an example of presenting a fake story as truth said the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting incident in the US was a mock exercise by security forces, and was presented by the media as a terrorist attack in which news of death of students was also spread.

In actual, not a single student lost his life in that incident. Renowned writer Jim Fetzer in his book No Body Died in the Sandy Hook also claimed this and revealed the truth behind this, Dr Mujahid added.

Dr Noshina Saleem said being the first seat of journalism education in South Asia, several politicians and journalists had honour of studying in this department since its inception.  The media graduates also took oath to abide by journalistic values and ethics.
