KARACHI: “True revolution will only come when farmers represent farmers, labourers represent labourers, and students represent students in assemblies,” said Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) chairman and Federal Minister for Information Technology Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui on Tuesday.
Siddiqui was speaking at an event marking the 46th foundation day of All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organisation (APMSO), which is the mother organisation of the MQM and all its offshoots, including the MQM-P, at the park adjacent to the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters.
He commented that despite all hardships, troubles and difficulties, the APMSO remained strong. He asserted that the student organisation’s history will be part of future curricula, underscoring its significance in the political landscape of Pakistan, especially for the rights of the oppressed segments of the society.
He said the MQM has consistently represented middle class people in assemblies, which is its success and perseverance of the culture it vies to implement. “Without us, neither any government can be formed, nor can it survive,” he added, emphasising the APMSO’s crucial role in providing leadership to the party.
Siddiqui asserted that as long as the APMSO remains strong, the movement for the rights of the middle-class populace will remain alive and young. He said that for many years, there have been various restrictions on the APMSO, but it is still continuing its mission to provide students a ladder to enter politics.
He said that the activities of the APMSO were imprisoned, tortured and murdered to deter the organisation from working towards its goal that it to secure rights of the 98 percent people in the country, but with determination they continued with their cause.
“We were banned from educational institutions, but then in the 1987 elections, we ousted those who banned us from politics by clinching a landsliding victory,” the MQM-P chairman added.
He opined that the character of the nation will be built through the role of the APMSO and emphasized that the organisation should not be seen merely as a branch but as a separate entity that is the strength of the MQM.
