Shameless elites

This refers to the editorial, ‘Shameless elite’ (May 7). Nayar Hussain Bukhari and his son’s assault on a policeman is a condemnable act. The irony is that these so-called elites consider themselves sacred cows. Nayar Bukhari, being a former senate chairman, deserved no unusual treatment at the search gate. The logic by some PPP stalwarts that Nayar is a well-known personality and should not have been searched is faulty. They fail to understand that that the prime security dictum is that nobody is an exception.

How can a guard be expected to recognise a person out of thousands? The act of Nayar Bukhari’s son slapping the guard is unpardonable. It is a good sign that the Islamabad police tried to arrest them. It is again encouraging that Bukhari presented himself for bail. Now both of them should be dealt with in accordance with the law.

If a policeman on duty checks a person, he is simply performing his duty. It is the police that are conducting their duties so that politicians like Nayar Hussain Bokhari can sleep peacefully at night. Hundreds of policemen have died in the line of duty. How many of our blood-sucking politicians have donated even Rs50 to the Police Shaheed Fund.

The Islamabad IG has taken a principled stand. One wishes we had more police officers like him. I demand of the civil society to support our police.
