EOBI pensioners consist of a large number of senior citizens retired from various semi-government and private organizations who are struggling to make ends meet due to their low pensions. A promised increase in pensions is being eagerly awaited as the cost of living has risen tremendously. It has therefore become imperative for the government to review and raise the EOBI pension by a reasonable amount immediately. It is worth mentioning here that the current stipend is not enough to meet miscellaneous living expenses including utilities, medical expenses, food, travelling, shelter, clothing etc.
Under the prevailing circumstances, it has become very difficult for senior citizens to survive and it is unfortunate how they are continuously being ignored. The monthly EOBI pension should be raised to at least Rs25000, which is unlikely to add to the burden of the national exchequer as EOBI funds are generated through the contributions of employees.
