ISLAMABAD: The general council meeting of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) to elect former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as the PMLN President will be held in Lahore on May 11.
PMLN Secretary General and Federal Minister for Planning and Development confirmed to The News that the general council meeting of the party will be held on May 11.
The party sources said the general council, besides electing Nawaz Sharif as president unopposed, will take some important decisions regarding party’s restructuring at different levels.
It is pertinent to mention here that the former prime minister was disqualified from holding any public position after being convicted. Nawaz Sharif was convicted by the Accountability Court in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references. The accountability court had awarded a 10-year jail term with an eight million pounds fine to Nawaz Sharif in the Avenfield case and a 7-year sentence in the Al-Azizia reference. The court also disqualified Nawaz Sharif from holding public office for 10 years.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) acquitted him in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references on November 29 and December 12 last year respectively.
