Police on Sunday claimed that the policeman who was strangled to death and whose body was burnt at his house in the Soldier Bazaar neighbourhood a day earlier was a victim of his two sons. Police arrested one of the suspects, while the other was also included in the investigation.

Soldier Bazaar SHO Asad Ali said that retired police constable Saleem Ansari was strangled to death on Saturday, then his body was set on fire by his sons Salman and Imran. A case was filed against them on behalf of the state, while Salman was arrested and he also admitted his involvement in the murder during his interrogation.

Police said the sons strangled their father to death over a property dispute, then poured petrol over his body and set it on fire. Officials said the body was burnt to give the incident the appearance of an accident.

The deceased used to run a confectionery shop after his retirement from the police force. The arrested suspect is an electrician, while the other suspect is a serving policeman.

The SHO said the sons had tried to prevent the post-mortem examination of their father’s body, which raised suspicions for the police. The autopsy revealed that the victim was strangled to death. After the victim and his wife separated, Salman kept living with his father, while Imran left the house to live with his mother. Further investigation into the case is under way.
