Letter to IMF‘Imran, PTI leaders would’ve to face criminal proceedings’
Sources revealed that agencies concerned have collected a copy of the letter and same is being studied for further action
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and the party leadership would have to face criminal proceedings over their letter written to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), interior ministry sources said here on Wednesday.
In the letter, Imran Khan called on the global lender to ensure that its guidelines regarding “good governance as well as conditionalities” were satisfied before granting a financial facility to Pakistan.
Sources told The News the letter was highly offensive and detrimental to the national interests. The PTI, earlier in the day, wrote the letter to the IMF and demanded an election audit of “at least 30 per cent of the National and provincial assemblies’ seats”, which the party said could be accomplished in “merely two weeks”.
The IMF bailout programme will expire in April and a new government will have to negotiate a long-term arrangement to keep the economy stable. The party alleged that the February 8 general election which, it said, caused the public expenditure of Rs50 billion or $180 million, were “subjected to widespread intervention and fraud in counting of votes and compilation of results”.
Sources revealed that the agencies concerned have collected a copy of the letter and the same is being studied for further action.
The persons, instrumental in penning down the letter, would also be implicated in the case.
The letter is being scrutinized by experts and a report would be ready by Friday (tomorrow), added the sources.
