KARACHI: The president of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Atif Ikram Sheikh, congratulated former senior vice president Mirza Ikhtiar Baig on winning a seat in the national assembly on Tuesday, and expressed hope that he would promote pro-business policies in parliament.
Sheikh said Baig was a respected and accomplished leader who had been active in various social, economic and political spheres for decades. He urged the new government to utilize his expertise and network in export markets and diplomatic circles, noting that Baig was also the honorary consul general of Yemen in Pakistan and had received two civil awards from the state.
Saquib Fayyaz Magoon, the senior vice president of FPCCI, echoed Sheikh's sentiments and said it was encouraging to have a true representative of trade and industry in the legislature. He said Baig knew the issues affecting the business community inside-out and would be a strong and effective voice in the national assembly.
Magoon said Baig's election would facilitate the representation of trade and industry in the government setup at a critical time in Pakistan's economic history. He said the industry needed a strong voice in the system and Baig was an excellent choice for his exceptional credentials as an industrialist and exporter himself.
