KARACHI: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) initiated a probe into the alleged embezzlement and illegal appointments in Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI) and sought record from the commissioner of the Institution.
The SESSI is an independent provincial body working for the social security and welfare of the low-paid workers, administratively controlled by the Sindh Labour Department and the Minister of Labour who by virtue of his post becomes the chairman of the institution.
According to the official correspondence of the NAB Karachi, the authorities approached the SESSI commissioner and asked him to submit the details of procurement made for hospitals under the SESSI, including medicines, ventilators, other medical equipment, liveries, laboratory disposables, consumable items, dietary Items, hospital furniture, X-ray films, laboratory equipment, radiology equipment, fixtures for hospital, computers and laptops and other items from 2016-17 and 2021-22.
The NAB also sought the details of the procurement of ventilators during the Covid-19 for SESSI hospitals, methodology of procurement adopted (tender, quotation, etc.), price and specification of ventilator purchased (brand name, origin), manufacturing year, imported, local, certified, output and performance.
The NAB authorities also directed to submit the audit report of a big industrial unit of Karachi’s Korangi industrial area, the same unit’s year-wise financial contribution to SEESI, the number of employees working in the same industrial unit, audit, and assessment report of the SESSI of the said unit.
Apart from the NAB inquiry, the Sindh Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) has also launched an investigation into the alleged embezzlement of public funds, corruption in the purchase of medicines, questionable deal over Benazir Mazdoor Cards against the officers of the Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI) following the direction of the Sessions Court, South, Karachi.
