JI demands transparency as training of DROs to begin today
Sindh Election Commissioner Sharifullah on Monday administered oath to District Returning Officers (DROs) in the province.
He administered oath to all DROs from his office online, a statement said. On this occasion, Sharifullah said that the training of DROs will start on December 19 (today). He added that the election laws would come into effect immediately after taking the oath.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman urged the newly appointed Sindh election commissioner to take robust measures ensuring transparency in the upcoming general elections on February 8, 2024.
A JI delegation, led by Rehman, met with the provincial election commissioner at his office on Monday. Notable JI leaders, including Raja Arif Sultan, Saifuddin Advocate, Qazi Sadaruddin, and Sohaib Ahmed, were part of the delegation. After the meeting, the JI chief held a press briefing, sharing the details of the discussions. He conveyed that the election commissioner assured the JI delegation of transparency in the upcoming general elections, expressing optimism that the newly appointed commissioner would uphold his commitments.
He stated that the JI raised its concerns and demanded with the provincial election commission. He emphasised the resolution of issues related to political governors, asserting that it remained a question mark on the transparency of the electoral process until addressedpromptly. Expressing grave concerns, Rehman highlighted the appointment of politicised returning officers and district returning officers, as well as the role of some politically motivated polling staffers. The election commissioner assured the JI delegation of strict action against any wrongdoing and urged them to report any discrepancies for immediate action. Both sides agreed on the critical importance of monitoring in ensuring fair elections.
He raised the issue of alleged revenge measures by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) against government employees who testified about rigging tactics during the commission's proceedings. He emphasised the JI's stance for impartiality and transparency, urging the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) not to favor any political party. In response to a question, he confirmed that JI would field candidates in all constituencies of Karachi, expressing hope for the party to emerge as the single largest in the province. Regarding seat adjustment, he mentioned that the option was open but limited.
