SC urged to fix date for plea seeking general elections

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court was Thursday requested to fix next week a constitutional petition seeking general elections in the country.

Zafar Ali Shah advocate has filed an application with the apex court praying for fixing his petition seeking the holding of general elections.

Ali submitted that he had filed a petition on March 25, 2023 regarding not holding the general elections within 90 days as per command of the constitution before this court with the prayer that action under Article 6 of the constitution may be initiated against the respondents including Mian Shahbaz Shari, chief secretary Punjab, IG Punjab, Chief Minister Punjab Mohsin Naqvi and others.

He submitted that his petition was pending adjudication with the apex court adding that a similar matter had already been decided vide order dated November 3, 2023 by this court while a member of the bench Justice Athar Minallah recently in his additional note held that the president of Pakistan, governors of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Election Commission of Pakistan were directly responsible for not holding the general election with the time stipulated by the Constitution.

The petitioner submitted that now it was a vital question before him and the people of Pakistan whether it was feasible and constitutionally perfect to hold the general election which were supposed to be held on February 8, 2024 under the supervision of the same setup. He submitted that if his petition was not fixed for hearing, then he and the public at large would suffer a lot. He prayed that his petition may kindly be fixed for hearing at an early date.
