LAHORE
The Lahore High Court Tuesday ordered consolidating all petitions challenging the Punjab Protection of Women against Violence Act (PPWVA).
Justice Shahid Waheed directed the LHC office to consolidate all such petitions and fix before a bench. Justice Shahid Waheed issued the directions while hearing a petition of a local resident, Emmanuel. The petitioner counsel submitted that the impugned act was repugnant to the Islamic injunctions and also in violation of the Constitution. He said the Constitution and the state religion had provided the solution. He said in case of a conflict between spouses arbitration procedures had also been provided in the Holy Quran, which should be applied and strengthened instead of making the conflict a legal matter. He said the impugned act would destroy family system of Punjab and there would be rapid increase in divorce cases and ultimately it would lead to immorality. He submitted that the position of man given by Holy Quran was being affected by the definition of man given in this act.
