EWCA Islamabad gets outstanding chapter award

The East-West Center Association Islamabad Chapter (EWCA-IC) received the ‘2016 Outstanding EWCA Chapter Award’ in recognition of its community services. The achievement is particularly significant in view of the fact that there are nearly 50 regional and special interest chapters in the world participating in similar activities.
The award was handed over at an international conference held recently in Manila, Philippines, and organized by the East-West Center based in Hawaii and EWCA around the globe.
EWCA-IC was established in 2006 when Dr. Arjumand Faisel was appointed its president and an executive committee was formed. With more than 62,000 members in 166 countries, the EWCA is a large community of scholars and professionals working to advance international cooperation and understanding among people in the Asia-Pacific region and the United States.
EWCA-IC consists of Alumni of East-West Center (EWC) who are residing in Islamabad; currently, their number is more than 40. Over the decade, the Chapter has organized more than 25 important programmes under the dynamic leadership of its president that has helped to serve different communities across Pakistan. Some of these were ‘Hug a Child’ activities for orphans of 2005 earthquake victims, seminars about public awareness for safety measures to be adopted in design and construction of buildings, street theatre for health education of residents of slums by the slum dwellers, ‘Unseen Visions,’ a two-month long exhibition of Pakistani artists in USA, an exhibition ‘Film Art For Homes’ to highlight the plight of billboard painters and to give them alternative avenues for income generation, etc.
A very distinguished activity of EWCA-IC has been an exhibition of paintings by students of House of Light School (HOLS), organized at gallery 6, Islamabad, which led to pouring in of funds of over Rs. 1 million not only from Pakistan but from other counties as well.
