Swan claims first gold for Pakistan at SAG

KARACHI: Swimmer Lianna Swan won the first gold for Pakistan at the ongoing South Asian Games 2016 

by winning the 200m breaststroke competition in Guwahati, India, on Saturday.

The dubai-based swimmer clocked 02:48.85, while her rivals Hasanthi Nugawela of Sri Lanka and Romana Akhtar of Bangladesh claimed silver and bronze, respectively.

Swan is making her debut at the competitions and has already shown a lot of promise. She is also expected to represent Pakistan at the Rio Olympics to be staged later this year.

In the women’s freestyle 4x100m relays, Pakistan won bronze through Kiran Khan, Bisma Khan, Areeba Sheikh and Swan.

Kiran also finished at seventh in the freestyle 200m with a time of 02:25.52.

Meanwhile, in the 57kg category of wrestling, Pakistan’s Mohammad Bilal won a silver. He participated against India’s Ravindar.

In the 65kg category, Nadir bagged silver for Pakistan. He faced India’s Rajneesh.

Abdullah Ghafoor won bronze in men’s 56kg weightlifting competitions with 227 points. The gold was taken away by Gururaja of India with 241 points.

In women’s 30km individual time trial, Sabiha Bibi won bronze for Pakistan. She had a final time of 

50:10.598.

In volleyball team event, Pakistan defeated Afghanistan 3-0, while they finished runners-up in the women’s team event.
