7th annual health research moot Dr Roghani all praise for KMU

PESHAWAR: Prominent health experts from all over Pakistan gathered in Peshawar and delivered lectures on various topics during the 7th annual health research conference held at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s lone public sector medical university, Khyber Medical University (KMU).

Health Minister Shahram Khan Tarakai inaugurated the conference and praised the efforts and services of the university being made for promotion of medical education.Deputy Speaker of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Mehr Taj Roghani chaired the second day session as chief guest.

In her remarks, she said that being the lone public sector medical university of the province, KMU has the huge responsibility of fulfilling the expectations of the government, public, policy makers, managers and patients.

“Local solutions of the local problems will lead to a step change in the healthcare delivery and efficiency,” she said while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the 7th annual health research conference organised by ORIC-KMU in Peshawar.

Secretary Health Abid Majeed, Vice-Chancellor KMU Dr Muhammad Hafizullah, Director Academics Dr Muhammad Ilyas Saeedi, Director IBMS Dr Jawad Ahmad and Director ORIC Dr Ziaul Haq, medical educationists, researchers, principals of medical and dental colleges, faculty and a large number of students were also present at the occasion.

Mehr Taj Roghani said that she was very glad to know that in a very short period, KMU has grown tremendously. “And now it has eight constituent and 35 affiliated colleges and institutes, imparting quality education to thousands of students in medical, public health, nursing, paramedics, physiotherapy and basic medical sciences,” she added.

She said that the secret behind the development of the developed nations was hard work, dedication and research based education system. While praising the KMU research efforts, the deputy speaker said that all these research initiatives should be beneficial for the overall wellbeing and better health of the general public.

Dr Mehr Taj hoped that the recommendations of the conference should be shared with the health department for execution and for the benefit of the ailing humanity. Earlier, while talking to the inaugural session Secretary Health Abid Majeed as guest of honour said that he believes on practical measures and steps have been taken to minimise the patient burden on the big hospitals through strengthening secondary and primary health care delivery system.

He explained that after introducing health insurance scheme for the poor ailing population of four districts of the province. “Now this scheme is expended with the cost of Rs.3.1billion to the 10 districts of the province which will cover almost 50 per cent population of the province,” he added.

Dr Hafizullah and Director ORIC Dr Ziaul Haq threw light on achievements of the university and the objectives and theme of the conference. Later on a focus group discussion was held on the sub theme of ‘Triple burden (non-communicable diseases, communicable diseases and injuries) and triple response’. This session was chaired jointly by VC KMU and secretary, whereas DG Health, DHS Fata and representatives of WHO, UNICEF, UNDP and international and local NGOs were also attended the discussion.
