Over 178,000 students to appear for intermediate exams from April 28

The first phase of the higher secondary school certification annual examinations 2016 would be held from April 28 to May 19, an official of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) announced on Tuesday.

Around 1,78,654 candidates have registered for annual exams of science (pre-engineering and pre-medical), science general, home economics, medical technology and commerce (regular and private).

During the first phase of annual exams, papers of science (pre-engineering and pre-medical), science general, home economics and medical technology would be taken between 09:30am to 12:30pm, in which 98,640 candidates are likely to appear. The papers of commerce (regular and private) are scheduled from 2:30pm till 5:30pm, in which 80,014 candidates expected to show up.

As many as 212 examination centres will be set up for both morning and evening sessions, out of which 29 examination centres have been declared “sensitive”, while 17 such centres have been marked as “most sensitive”, the official said.

He said the BIEK had appointed 106 centre control officers, of which 56 CCO would perform duties in morning shift and other 50 CCO would cater to their task during the second shift. “The Board has also set up 27 vigilance teams, which would be comprised of four senior professors.”

He said the BIEK had also formed an especial vigilance team which would work under commands of the board’s chairman, Akhtar Ghori.

“The BIEK has also launched a monitoring cell which would comprise 10 senior professors while another monitoring cell would work at the Commissioner Office. Senior teaching faculty would be given a task to work with the law-enforcement agencies and other relevant departments to curb use of unfair means in the examination centres, ensure no functions of photo state machines and implementation of Section 144,” he further said.

He said the BIEK had written letters to the city commissioner, the director general of the Sindh Rangers and the inspector general of the Sindh police in this regard.

“An information technology cell will be set up at the BIEK which would facilitate inquiries regarding any complaint.”

The service of private security guards would be hire for the CCOs so that they could perform their duties without any hassle, he said and added that the BIEK had also written a letter to the managing director of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board to make sure supple of water.

He claimed the board was an devising an alternate plan to provide waters to the candidates so that it could avoid any difficult situation in case of failure from the KWSB to provide a water supply.

DG Colleges' directives

Sindh Director General Colleges Professor Dr Nasir Ansar has directed the teaching staff to ensure their presence during the exams.

He stated that as per the decisions taken in the meeting of the steering committee, all teaching staff should strictly observe their duties.

He said the staff could be asked to perform duties of the centre superintendent, the deputy centre superintendent, the assistant centre superintendent and others as the part of their duties,

He warned that in case of any violation, strict actions would be taken immediately.

Meanwhile, the DG colleges also notified that the heads of all the institutions and colleges must act as “Internal Superintendent” during the exams and the non-teaching staff could not be deputed to work as invigilators.

He asked them to ensure that the supply of power and water must be available and no disconnection shall be initiated by the relevant agencies at the examination centres. In case of any disconnection, he asked them to inform the status immediately so that the process of examination could be conducted smoothly.  

He also directed to ensure that the staff performing examination duties should not be indulged in any malpractices or in any sort of unfair means.  “If any staff member is found guilty, he or she must be dealt severely under the rules.”
