Says Chhotu Gang exposes police efficiency

LAHORE

The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has expressed concern over law and order in Punjab, saying the Chhotu Gang exposed the government and police efficiency.

The Punjab government and police have not provided proper security to judges, lawyers and litigants in and around court premises for which bar leaders repeatedly made requests, due to this reason Lahore Bar Association observed a strike the other day, says a joint statement issued by PBC members Maqsood Buttar, Tahir Nasrullah Warraich, Ch Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan, Mian Muhammad Shafiq Bhandara, Rasheed A Rizvi, Muhammad Shoaib Shaheen and Malik Ghulam. The statement says Punjab police is only targeting lawyers as DPO Okara brutally tortured members of the district bar association in a recent incident. It says no practical steps have been taken so far as per consistent demand of bar associations.

A joint meeting of bar councils and associations would be held on April 26 in Lahore to chalk out future course of action and strategy on law and order in the province and other matters concerning to lawyers, it concludes.

PTI: A PTI delegation led by Shah Mahmood Qureshi Wednesday called on representatives of Punjab Bar Council to discuss situation in wake of Panama leaks.

In a post meeting media talk, Qureshi said the Panama leaks was not merely a political issue but involved grave allegations of money laundering and corruption. He said his party’s demand for an independent inquiry into the allegations was very much logical and inevitable.

He said the party’s delegation conveyed its concerns to the bar leaders over constitution of the judicial commission by the government and discussed possible solutions for a fair and transparent probe into the matter.

The bar’s vice chairman Ch Muhammad Hussain said no inquiry commission would be acceptable for the bar without the participation of lawyers. He said a meeting of tehsil, district and high court bar associations would be convened soon to chalk out a plan on the matter.
