KARACHI: The Local Government Ordinance 1979 once again came into effect after Acting Governor Sindh, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, signed the bill into law here on Friday, Geo News reported.
On Thursday, the Sindh Assembly adopted a bill to withdraw the Sindh Peoples Local Government Ordinance (SPLGO) 2012 and reinstate the local bodies act of 1979.
After signing of the new bill Local Government System 1979 stands restored throughout the province with immediately effect.
Sindh Senior Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq, Sindh Minister for Local Government Agha Siraj Durrani, Sindh Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Muhammad Ayaz Soomro, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, Sindh Minister for Culture Sassui Palejo, Sindh Minister for Excise and Taxation Mukesh Kumar Chawla were present at the signing ceremony.
The bill, pertaining to the withdrawal of SPLGO 2012 and restoration of the Local Government Act 1979, was presented by Sindh Law Minister Ayaz Soomro amidst protest from Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) MPAs.
Earlier on Friday, The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) lawmakers walked out of the National Assembly session to protest the Sindh government's decision to repeal the SPLGA.
Speaking on a point of order, MQM's Asif Husnain claimed that the government had negated the basic principles of democracy by repealing the SPLGA and restoring the Sindh Local Government Ordinance 1979.
"The Local Government Ordinance, which has been restored, was basically a law introduced by a dictator. We strongly condemn it and walk-out of the session," Husnain said.
