PESHAWAR: The prices of items of daily use, especially edibles, have gone up ahead of the arrival of Ramazan as there is no check from the government and district administration.

During the last one week and so shopkeepers in areas like Gulberg, Swati Gate and Nauthia, etc have increased prices of milk, yogurt, meat and chicken besides other necessary items as the quarters concerned are looking the other way.

Milk, which was priced Rs100 per litre in the past, is now being sold at Rs110, meat rate is from Rs 350 to 360 per kg and chicken is being sold at Rs195 to 200 per kg.

The milk sellers are not displaying official price list at shops. The district administration and other relevant bodies never bother to check prices, let alone the quality of the eatables.

In Gulberg locality, shopkeepers like milk sellers, butchers and chicken shops fix prices at own sweet will as the relevant officials do not bother to visit the area for checking.

The residents complained that they were bound to buy edibles at high prices compared to market rates because of absence of checking from the government departments and civic bodies of the city.

Fruit and vegetables are being sold at prices fixed by the shopkeepers and vendors themselves.

The Gulberg locality is virtually out of the reach of the district administration and civic bodies. Encroachments and dumping of construction materials on the road is very common along with digging. Erecting speed breakers is not considered a crime and violation of rules in Gulberg.

The residents demanded the government and district administration to at least ask the officials to visit the area once a month and ensure checking of prices and quality of eatables along with removal of illegal encroachments.
