ISLAMABAD: Mohsin Ali and Moazzam Ali, the two prime accused in the Dr Imran Farooq murder case, confessed to their direct involvement in the killing of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader.
Sources on Thursday said a joint investigation team (JIT) — formed to probe the murder of Dr Imran — interrogated the accused. Mohsin admitted that he was present on the spot but it was Kashif who attacked the MQM leader with a knife ‘on Altaf Hussain’s birthday’, the sources added.
Mohsin also revealed that he was an activist of the All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organisation (APMSO) – the student wing of the MQM formed in June 11 1978 — and directly involved in the assassination. He told the JIT that Moazzam was the person who arranged his and Kashif’s travel to the UK.
Sources quoted Mohsin as admitting that he used to work in Com-net – a company owned by Moazzam. It is important to note that FIA Director Inaam Ghani has been made the JIT head on the Interior Ministry’s directives. Representatives of other law enforcement agencies are members of the team.
The JIT has grilled two persons, Mohsin and Khalid Shamim, who were arrested from Chaman, and another key accused Moazzam in Islamabad.According to sources, Moazzam has named five MQM leaders for their alleged involvement in the murder case. He also admitted to arranging Mohsin and Kashif’s travel to the UK to get the job done.
Khalid Shamim, another accused in the murder case, revealed that it was his responsibility to pick up Kashif and Mohsin from the airport and shift them to a secure location, sources added. There is nothing on record about the whereabouts of Kashif but media reports suggest that he may perhaps not be alive.
