PESHAWAR: An overseas PhD scholar of the Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan has defended his doctoral thesis. The scholar, Izazur Rahman, defended his thesis, “Novel particle swarm optimisation algorithms with application in power systems” at College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences, Brunel University, London, United Kingdom. Izazur Rahman completed his PhD studies in about four years under the umbrella of Faculty Development Programme, said a press release.

Lady councillor offers building for addicts treatment

DAGGAR: Shireen Rokhan, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lady councillor for Daggar tehsil, offered a building for free treatment of drug addicts in Elai village. This she said while speaking at a monthly session of the tehsil council here on Thursday. Convener Khalid Khan, Tehsil Nazim Mufti Saeedur Rehman Mufakir, Tehsil Municipal Officer Mohammad Zada Khan, Tehsil Revenue Officer Ameen Khan and officers of line departments attended the meeting. She said that she took the decision because the trend of drug addiction among youth was on the rise in the district.

3kg worms removed from boy’s stomach

TIMERGARA: Worms weighing three kilograms were removed from the stomach of a 12-year-old boy at a private hospital here on Friday. Tanveer, hailing from Tar Pa Tar area of Upper Dir district, was brought to a private hospital in Timergara after he started feeling severe abdominal pain. Dr Abdul Wahab operated upon the boy and removed 3kg parasitic worms from the boy’s stomach. Health of the patient is out of danger now, the doctor said and added that such worms were often caused by drinking contaminated water.

Man killed in road accident

JAMRUD: A man, Said Anwar, was killed and another sustained injuries when a vehicle plunged into a ravine in Jamrud teshil of Khyber Agency, official sources said on Friday.A speedy car was heading from Landikotal to Jamrud bazaar when the driver lost control due to failure of brakes and the vehicle plunged into a ditch near Teddi Bazaar.

Two shot dead in Tarbela

HARIPUR: Two brothers were gunned down over an old enmity on Tarbela road here on Friday.Police said Banaras and his brother Tariq, resident of Pohaar village, were on way to Haripur city when an unidentified gunman sprayed bullets at them near Mukaddar Shah filing station on Tarbela road. Both of them died on the spot. The attacker managed to flee the scene.The police and locals reached the spot and shifted the bodies to District Headquarters Hospital in Haripur. The postmortem report revealed that the deceased had been hit in the heads. The motive behind the double murder said to be an old family dispute.

Preventive measures urged against floods

CHITRAL: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Sultan Wazir on Friday asked the government to construct embankment along the water courses, streamline and remove debris from streams to reduce risk of flood in the district. Speaking at a press conference here, he said that Chitral district was prone to floods and needed the district government and National Disaster Managed Authority’s special attention to employ preventive measures against floods. “Chitral is prone to flooding in summer. The devastation could be far higher than the previous one if no preventive measures were taken,” he added.The PPP leader urged the government to make the Chitral Development Authority functional to ensure development of the far-off and backward areas of the district.

MNA pays surprise visit to FR Bannu schools

BANNU: Member National Assembly (MNA) Qaiser Jamal Afridi on Friday expressed concerns over the absenteeism by the teachers in the state-run schools in the Frontier Region (FR) Bannu. After paying surprise visits to some government schools in FR Bannu, the PTI MNA said that the teachers were being paid salaries from the exchequer. “There is no need for the teachers in the FR areas if the tribal students cannot get education properly,” he said.“There is no room for the absent teachers in the government just to draw salaries against nothing,” he said, adding that either the teachers would have to ensure their presence in the schools or should quit their jobs.
