CHARSADDA: A schoolchild who had topped his annual Class-VII examination succumbed to his burn injuries at a hospital in Islamabad on Friday after having tried to commit suicide on March 25 in the Shabqadar tehsil in Charsadda district because his poor parents could not buy him new school uniform, sources said.
The sources said the boy named Kamran, son of Ijaz Gul, was a student of Mohmand Public School located in the limits of Saro Killay Police Station in Shabqadar.“He got first position in the class and was promoted to Class-8 a few days ago. However, he tried to burn himself by sprinkling petrol over his body as his wage-earner father could not buy him new uniform,” his neighbour told reporters.
The student was shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar in a precarious condition and later referred to a burn centre in Islamabad, the sources said. “His poor parents could not arrange Rs0.2 million for his emergency treatment. After a lot of efforts they were able to collect only Rs50, 000 for his treatment in Islamabad,” the family’s neighbour said.
“Before the doctor could start his treatment, Kamran succumbed to his injuries at the hospital,” the villager said.He said Kamran’s father did odd jobs in Rawalpindi to earn his livelihood. Despite his limited resources, he arranged the marriage of his eldest daughter. Kamran’s elder brother was a grade-9 student and his two small sisters were studying in a primary school in the area.
