The College of Medical Laboratory Technology (CMLT) Literary Forum and Blood Donors Society (BDS) organised a poster and speech competition here at the CMLT campus in National Institute of Health (NIH) in collaboration with Safe Blood Transfusion Programme (SBTP).
The poster and speech competition was arranged as part of ‘World Blood Donor Day 2015’ celebrations with the main objective of acknowledging the efforts of voluntary blood donors registered with the CMLT Blood Donor Society and motivating students of the CMLT on voluntary blood donation.
National Coordinator SBTP Professor Hassan Abbas Zaheer was the chief guest at the competition that was also attended by the CMLT Principal Farah Jamil and Vice Principal Professor Yousaf Naeem.
The organisers of the competition distributed promotional material including T-Shirts, caps, mugs, pens, pamphlets and badges among the participants. Zahira Hanif and Babar Fayyaz secured the first position in poster and speech competition respectively.
Winners of the competition and participants were awarded shields and certificates of participation.
Addressing to the students and CMLT administration, Professor Hassan appreciated the efforts of the blood donor society and stressed the need for increasing number of voluntary blood donors in society.
He said that only a small number of female voluntary blood donors donate blood and their number is needed to be increased. He said the CMLT BDS should increase its voluntary donors’ pool by involving more male and female students.
Speaking on the occasion, In-charge CMLT Literary Forum and BDS Professor Muhammad Shoaib Kiani said that the CMLT BDS has decided to donate blood for patients in critical care including trauma cases.
He said that over 400 pints of blood have been transfused through BDS in last one-and-a-half year while this year, the BDS has registered as many as 250 voluntary blood donors.
All the 250 voluntary blood donors registered with the BDS are ready for blood donation as their blood has been screened for hepatitis B and C, viral disease, HIV, malaria parasite and typhoid, said Professor Shoaib while talking to ‘The News’ on Sunday.
He added that the CMLT BDS can arrange another 250 voluntary blood donors on a short notice in case of any disaster. He added that public sector hospitals can contact BDS at CMLT in case of any emergency to have volunteers for blood donation.
