The result of elections for council members of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) was announced according to which the ‘Friends of CPSP’ panel won all 20 seats from all across the country with overwhelming majority.
Professor Zafarullah Chaudhary’s panel (CPSP Friends) won all 20 seats, 11 from Punjab province, six from Sindh, two from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one from Balochistan, by clean sweep. Professor of Medicine at Rawalpindi Medical College Dr. Shoaib Shafi stood first in Islamabad region and second all over Pakistan while Professor Khalid Gondal stood first by securing maximum votes all over Pakistan.
It is for the first time in the history of CPSP that three councillors were elected from Pakistan Army including General Salman Ali, Major General Sohail Hafeez and Brigadier Aslam Khan. The newly elected council members elected Professor Zafarullah Chaudhary unanimously as President of the CPSP. Professor Shoaib Shafi was appointed as Controller of Examination and member executive committee, a powerful body of the CPSP that frames all rules and policy of the college.
Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at RMC Dr. Rizwana Chaudhary was also elected as council member for the third consecutive term. It is important that the CPSP is the highest degree awarding institution in Pakistan on post- graduate medical education in around 73 disciplines. It was established 50 years back under the act of parliament.
The CPSP is an autonomous body that covers nearly 95 per cent of the total specialists in medical profession in Pakistan. The CPSP has become the world’s largest post graduate training body and the ministry of health of Saudi Arabia has invited the CPSP for training opportunities in radiology and locum consultant jobs.
The CPSP announced that shortly a team led by Professor Shoaib Shafi would visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain to sign Memorandum of Understanding for post-graduate training in tertiary care hospitals. It is worth mentioning here that of over 24000 specialists in various medical science disciplines in Pakistan, well over 19000 are from the CPSP including over 12000 Fellows (FCPS) in different specialties and around 7400 Members (MCPS).
The CPSP began its endeavour by offering fellowship in only six specialties in 1962. Talking to ‘The News’ on Saturday, Professor Shoaib said that of the total CPSP fellows, well over 9000 doctors are considered as good standing fellows and were allowed to vote in the CPSP elections.
