The students OPF Girls College, which has been part of the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment) research programme for the last 8 years, have clinched first position for their research work and presentation on water at a GLOBE camp held in Oman, Muscat, near the Yetti Beach.
A handmade poster displaying the hydrology study site, coupled with the students’ research work on water over the years, was evaluated by a panel of judges as the best. OPF was the only school representing Pakistan among several others from seven countries participating in the camp.
OPF has been taking part in various GLOBE activities at the national and international levels. The principal of OPF Girls College Shaheena Masood, accompanied by teachers Afiya Absar and Syeda Nadia Raza, and students Mahirah Rohail and Umm-e-Aiman attended the GLOBE camp.
A formal opening ceremony marked the first day of the camp. Speeches were made by the national coordinator of Oman Nadira Al Arthy and the director of Africa region (GLOBE Programme) Mr. Mark. The reception ended with a cake-cutting ceremony followed by lunch.
All students were then divided into 8 GLOBE working stations. Each station had a leader and a spokesman, and each group was committed to working collaboratively. They were given different research tasks to complete within the allocated time. The students of OPF actively participated in the activity.
During the second half, students from Oman exhibited and evaluated their research related to GLOBE. Cultural presentations and lighting of lanterns marked the conclusion of the first day.
The second day of the camp featured an exploration visit, which was followed by an exhibition and evaluation of the research work done by the international students. A cultural programme was then held at night.
A prize distribution ceremony, which was aired live on Oman television, was held on the third day of the camp. Shaheena Masood received a shield while Mahirah Rohail and Umm-e-Aimen received Tablets, along with other gifts and certificates for achieving first position at the international level.
The managing director of OPF Girls College Habib-ur-Rehman, who has been supporting students and teachers in GLOBE research work,
congratulated the students
on their success. “OPF team has returned back to Pakistan with great honor,” he commented.
