After the rain, the chances of incidence of respiratory tract infections have reduced though, according to health experts, exposure to extreme cold pains in the body.
The continuous fall in temperature can also cause complications among chronic patients having heart problems and those who have ever suffered any kind of fracture.
After the rain, the number of patients with upper respiratory tract infections including flu and sore throat is on the fall mainly because the rain has cleansed the air and the air has become free from dust that contains a number of toxic chemicals, said a top official at allied hospitals while talking to ‘The News’ on Saturday.
Pleading anonymity, he said the extreme cold, however, is causing incidence of fever among general population and pains in both healthy and chronic patients of joint pains.
He added the rain improves quality of air but it does not mean that there would not be incidence of any infection. Like other health experts, he said population need much care during the existing cold wave as it may increase muscular and joint pains to a significant level particularly among patients who have any kind of muscular and joint problems or those who have undergone any kind of orthopaedic surgery.
He added that the persons who have suffered fracture at any time in the life may experience pain in the affected part or parts of the body in case they expose themselves to extreme cold for longer period of time.
The best care against extreme cold is covering of body with warm clothing and one should try to avoid staying outside in open spaces for longer period of time particularly early in the morning and in evening and night, said the expert.
It is important that the existing extreme cold wave may cause health threats and complications among children and elderly. Almost all hospitals across the province have been receiving heavy influx of child patients with the infections caused in result of recent cold wave.
Health experts say that the common cold and flu in children should not be taken lightly as these might lead to lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia.
It is important that more than 265,000 Pakistani children die each year from pneumonia, making it one of the leading killers of under five-year-old children in the country.
Head of Paediatrics Department at Rawalpindi Medical College Professor Rai Asghar is of the view that children should be avoided from getting wet and their bodies should be covered properly with warm clothing. Children below five years of age should not be exposed to extreme cold unnecessarily while school going children should be covered properly with warm clothing, he said.
