A ban on pillion riding on two-wheelers was imposed — effective since Tuesday night till Thursday midnight — across the province in connection with security arrangements on the occasion of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) being observed on December 3.
The initial plan was impose a ban on pillion riding since Wednesday night but the killing of two military personnel on MA Jinnah Road on Tuesday prompted the authorities to reconsider their decision and prepone its imposition by a day.
The home department issued notifications twice on Tuesday and the last one stated that a ban on pillion riding will be imposed from Tuesday night, since 10pm.
It reads: “In suppression of this department’s notification of dated December 1, 2015, the ban on pillion riding of motorcycles/scooters is hereby imposed under Section 144 (6) CrPC in Sindh with effect from 1/12/2015 at 10pm till 3-12-2015 12 midnight.”
The ban is not applicable on women, children younger than 12 years, senior citizens, disabled persons, journalists, personnel of law-enforcement agencies, security guards of all private companies in uniform and employees of essential services.
Hence, in pursuance of Section 195 (1) (a) CrPC, the SHOs of police stations concerned are authorised to register complaints under Section 188 PPC for the violation of Section 144 CrPC, adds the notification.
Schools closed
The provincial education department on Tuesday announced that schools in Karachi division will remain closed for two days, December 4 and 5, on account of the local government election.
Education minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro said teachers of most government schools and colleges will be performing election duties while polling stations have been set up in public sector educational institutions, so the provincial government has decided to close government and colleges in Karachi.
However, he asserted, all educational institutions in the rest of the province will remain closed on Thursday on account of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA).
