Gold smuggling bid foiled
A passenger was arrested as customs officials foiled a bid to smuggle gold jewellery worth Rs5 million at the Jinnah International Airport on Tuesday. He was remanded in the custody of the customs officials by a Customs and Taxation court judge.
A spokesman for the department said the personnel seized 1,350 grams of gold jewellery from the baggage of an incoming passenger Shahzad Ahmad, concealed in rechargeable batteries of two emergency lights and an electric fan. He was intercepted at the Green Channel of the international arrival hall of the airport.
According to his travel documents, he had arrived from Dubai via a recently introduced Emirates Airlines flight (EK-618) and had visited Dubai twice in one month.
The passenger was taken into custody whereas a case under Customs Act, 1969 was registered against him.
