The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has demolished around 40 unauthorised marriage halls and lawns in five days during its ongoing operation against illegal constructions across the city.
On Tuesday, three marriage lawns constructed at the Kashmir Sports Complex were razed by the KMC anti-encroachment department. Sindh Local Government Minister Sharjeel Memon, KMC Administrator Saqib Soomro and Municipal Commissioner Masood Alam and others were also present during the action at Kashmir Road.
Talking to the media, Memon claimed that for last 12 years these three lawns were being used for commercial purpose illegally. He blamed the former nazims and naib nazims of misusing the authoarity and awarding unauthorised allotments of the land for weddings and other private functions.
The minister ordered restoration of sports activities at the land that was solely meant for purpose.
Memon also asserted that some evidences were found showing that several KMC employees were involved in this illegal business. “I have directed the KMC administrator to initiate an inquiry against the culprits and terminate their services.”
He warned political parties and other groups involved in manipulating the city’s master plan to immediately evacuate encroached upon lands.
“We have learnt that money gathered from such illegal commercial activities was being used in carrying out terrorism activities. So far, no name or other identification has been confirmed but as soon as we get any knowledge in this regard, it will surely be shared with masses through media.”
