Two policemen were killed when a check post in Lea Market was ambushed by two gunmen within the remit of Kharadar police station.
Police constables Idrees Shah and Nadeem Ahmed had been present at the police picket in Lea Market when armed terrorists arrived and sprayed them with bullets, said Kharadar SHO Rana Khushi Mohammad while talking to The News.
He said Idrees was killed on the spot while Ahmed was critically injured and succumbed to his injuries sometime later.
“There are usually four policemen at the picket in Lee Market but at the time of the attack two of them had gone somewhere,” he said. “Idrees was sitting at the footpath when the attack happened.”
Quoting eye witnesses, Kharadar SHO said that three men had arrived on a motorcycle and then two of them got off and opened indiscriminate fire at the policemen, taking them by surprise.
“We have found 16 shell casings of 9mm pistol from the spot,” he said. “Both constables suffered multiple bullet injuries.”
He said the attack was part of the wave of targeted attacks on police personnel in the city and believed that activists of banned militant organisations could be involved.
A spokesman for the Karachi police confirmed the deaths of both constables, saying that the attack takes up the toll of policemen martyred this year to 34.
In a separate incident, he said, two Rangers officials were also killed in a suicide attack on their vehicle in North Nazimabad.
Moreover, he added, more than 50 other law-enforcement officials have been injured in attacks in different parts of the city.

Injured cop passes away
Meanwhile, another police constable of the Peerabad police, Kabeer Alam, 40, who had been seriously injured in an armed attack on a mobile near Banaras Chowk two weeks ago, passed away late on Sunday night at the PNS Shifa hospital where he had been admitted for treatment.
Constable Sajid Mehmood, 39, had been killed in the attack and Kabeer had been seriously injured when four armed terrorists had attacked two police mobile vans of Peerabad police beneath the Banaras flyover on March 17.
After sustaining multiple bullet injuries, Kabeer had been shifted to PNS Shifa where he underwent several surgeries but could not survive.
