The minister of state for national health services deplored on Saturday that the standard of education in Pakistan was deteriorating with each passing day.
Saira Afzal Tarar said the country needed to provide quality education and promote research to overcome the current socio-economic conditions and become a developed state.
The minister was speaking at the Annual Research Day 2015 organised by the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) at its Ojha campus.
“Pakistan has high mortality and morbidity rate,” said Saira. “The health indicators of Pakistan are very poor, whereas the education standard of the country is deteriorating. There is a need to look into the quality of education in Pakistan. More research should come up to improve the health situation in Pakistan.”
She stressed the need to provide a platform to enhance research activities in developing countries and also stressed on medical universities to facilitate research work of their students and faculty members.
The Annual Research Day aimed to showcase research through poster presentations being conducted by the faculty members and students throughout the year and to serve as a forum for interaction among faculty members and students.
The minister said it was a pleasure to know that the university was providing research grants to students and faculty members, and felicitated DUHS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Masood Hameed Khan and the university’s research department for regularly holding research activities.
Dr Khan said the motivation to observe a faculty research day was to enhance the enthusiasm towards performance of quality researchers. He said the purpose of research was creation of knowledge.
He said the Dow University was providing a platform for research activities and it was the duty of young scientists to take it to the highest level.
“Different institutions are recognised by their research work, and here at the Dow University we have allocated special funds for research activities.”
Dow Medical College Principal Prof Junaid Ashraf, School of Public Health Vice Dean Dr Kashif Shafique, Dr Talat Roomi and Dr Hassan also spoke on the occasion.
