Government gives away houses to flood victims

HYDERABAD: The government of Sindh has transferred the ownerships of 30 houses to the people affected by the 2011 devastating floods in a district in the city’s neighbourhood.
A local lawmaker of the provincial ruling party Syed Naveed Qamar handed over keys of the houses to the beneficiaries living in various villages of district Tando Muhammad Khan during a ceremony held recently.
“There will be more schemes in the future to support the poor and deprived families,” he said.
A non-government organisation Management and Development Foundation (MDF) with the support of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Housing Cell (SBBHC) are implementing the housing project under which a total of 170 housing units are to be gifted to the flood victims.
The people of Sindh experienced catastrophes because of floods consecutively in 2010, 2011 and 2012, resulting in a massive displacement and loss of assets, including shelters.
Only those beneficiaries whose household income is below Rs6,000 and who have no livestock left are selected for this gift scheme.
Syed Sabir Shah, director of SBBHC, said the government is facilitating the people by providing the houses through participatory approach through the inclusion of political representatives, civil service organisations and community in the project.
“This project will continue to serve the marginalised people and it will be the mandate of a housing cell to provide houses to the identified beneficiaries in all over the province,” Shah said.
Deputy Commissioner of Tando Muhammad Khan Asif Memon appreciated the efforts of MDF and the community and assured full cooperation throughout the project.
