Rabbani urges strengthening trade unions

KARACHI: Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani on Sunday called for strengthening trade unionism in the country to make the democracy strong.
Strong trade unions would help protect the rights of the working classes, he said while speaking as chief guest at a convention organised by the Home Based Women Workers Federation (HBWWF) here.
Raza Rabbani said almost half of the population consisted of women whose role was of immense importance for the progress and development of the country.For a welfare and forward looking country it was important that women should play their due role for nation building, he added.
The Senate chairman lauded contributions of women for national development. In this regard he referred to personalities like Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto.
Mian Raza Rabbani congratulated the HBWWF for organising a successful convention. He pointed out that there were laws pertaining to the elimination of domestic violence against the women but there was need for their effective implementation. The assemblies, he said, should further strengthen the laws.
HBWWF General Secretary Zehra Khan, trade unionist Habibuddin Junaidi, Rafiq Baloch of National Trade Union Federation and Faisal Edhi of the Edhi Foundation also spoke on the occasion.
