6,016 death row prisoners languishing in jails, Senate told

ISLAMABAD: The Senate was informed Tuesday that 6016 prisoners, who have been sentenced to death, are lodged in jails in the provinces.“The process of execution of prisoners, condemned to death, who have availed all legal options and their mercy petition rejected is continuing, as per law since December 17, 2014.

ISLAMABAD: The Senate was informed Tuesday that 6016 prisoners, who have been sentenced to death, are lodged in jails in the provinces.
“The process of execution of prisoners, condemned to death, who have availed all legal options and their mercy petition rejected is continuing, as per law since December 17, 2014. The name of such last prisoner executed in the country was Muhammad Aslam s/o Kabir at Bahawalpur on September 09, 2015,” Federal Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told the House.
Minister of Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif said that keeping in view the safety and security of the military courts, the names and related information about the judges appointed in these courts might not be disclosed. “This provision exists in the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Ordinance, 2015, which had already been passed by the Senate on August 11 this year,” the minister said in a written reply to a question by Senator Muhammad Azam Swati during the question hour.
He noted presently 10 military courts were functional while the 11th one was under process.
Chaudhry Nisar said that as per the Integrated Border Management System (IBMS), as many as 4,91,905 foreigners, other than diplomats came to Pakistan through various designated entry points from 2007 to August 10, 2015, and they did not return to their native countries. He was responding in writing to a question by PTI Senator Azam Swati.
