LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has denied a request of the Election Commission of Pakistan for appointment of election tribunal consisting of LHC judges for disposal of election petitions, said a press release issued by LHC on Saturday.
The ECP had decided not to extend the period of present election tribunals comprising retired district & sessions judges. So, the ECP sent a request to the LHC to constitute tribunals consisting of LHC judges. As per Section 57 of the Representation of People Act, 1976, election tribunals shall principally consist of a person who is a retired District and Sessions Judge, therefore, the ECP’s request cannot be acceded and is hereby declined, the press release added.
