Another death anniversary of Afghanistan’s former president Dr Najibullah has come and passed. He had many good qualities and his share of faults. However, he was a man of his age and time. Dr Najibullah’s brutal and tragic murder symbolises the larger tragedy of Afghanistan. The excesses committed after him made many Afghans look back with much favourable views on his tenure. However, what is important is that the people of Afghanistan should be left to themselves to decide their future.
Today’s Afghanistan faces many problems mainly because of unwarranted foreign interference and invasions. Finally, let us not forget the tragedy of Afghanistan’s children growing up in a state of war. As Khaled Hosseini so aptly says in his book, ‘The Kite Runner’, “There are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood.”
