This refers to the news report, ‘Demand for free Balochistan can be withdrawn: Brahamdagh’ (August 27). Time and again since independence the Baloch have revolted against the state and have been countered by successive governments with all the might of the state. This approach has invoked a sense of alienation among the Baloch and exacerbated the violence raging in the province. According to a French proverb, ‘you can do anything with bayonets except sit on them’. Similarly, you can do anything with force except bringing about lasting peace in the region. Balochistan is a political problem and needs a political solution. The offer by Brahamdagh Bugti for dialogue is a godsend, and the state should welcome it. It is time all sides tried to find an amicable solution to the Balochistan conundrum through dialogue. Inam Ullah Marwat
