One of the reasons our federal ministers perform so poorly is because of their utter disinterest in the affairs of their respective ministries and, at the same time, poor knowledge of the subject these ministries deal with. They seem to spend most of their time making senseless political statements just to appease the prime minister. This has been demonstrated a number of times much to the embarrassment of the government.
Recently, the Wapda chairman was constrained to inform, through a letter, the Minister of State for Water and Power Chaudhry Abid Sher Ali that the authority is no longer engaged in electricity transmission and distribution and is mandated to build water storage facilities only. The other case is of Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi who last week announced that Pakistan would import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from China for which Pakistan is constructing a 700km pipeline. First, China is not a country that exports LNG. Second, and most importantly, LNG cannot be transported through a pipeline. It is transported through specifically designed double-hulled cargo ships.
