‘Jeetain ge hum jeetain ge, har maidan mein jeetain ge,’ We sing this song on top of our voices whenever we venture into a battle in the sports arena. As if our opponents are playing to lose and blowing the bugle for the last post. First it was the World Cup where, despite singing our heads off, we got a drubbing. And now it is the Bangladeshis who whipped us in the One-Day series that we are not likely to forget in a hurry, and relegated us to the eighth spot in the cricket world, for good measure. A complete whitewash – so complete that it defies description. The ignominy of it all!
The Bangladeshi team should be eternally grateful to us because their players are now being feted and inundated with lucrative offers of sponsorships, endorsements, etc, from top brands and companies for having beaten the daylights out of us. Since we are the cause of it we need to sing our sports anthem with renewed vigour. So, all together now: ‘jeetain ge hum jeetain ge...’
