This refers to the letter, ‘POL benefits’ (March 19) by Dr Anwar Kabir Sheikh. The writer makes a very apt point when he says that the price of a certain brand of milk rose to Rs125 when the price of POL increased and instead of becoming cheaper when the price of POL tumbled, the price of a carton of milk rose to Rs140.
Obviously, the regulatory authority that is tasked to keep an eye on businesses that are scalping the public is not doing its job. On the other hand you have the Drug Regulatory Authority which, I believe, is there to ensure availability of medicines at reasonable prices. It too has failed to discharge its duties. Every now and then critical medicines are in short supply. When will we get good governance? When will the government act to benefit the public at large rather than big businesses?
